What Are You Overwhelmed By?

As we begin a new week, our new theme is “Overwhelmed”, and we’ll be using this song by Big Daddy Weave as we discuss this topic throughout the week.

As worship leaders, we can be overwhelmed by so many things – the stress of planning worship services week after week, the Monday morning critical emails about the music being too loud on Sunday, conflicts with the senior pastor, and the list can go on. These are all very stressful and can definitely be overwhelming.

In the midst of all of our stressful situations, though, we should also remember to take the time needed to be overwhelmed by God. When is the last time you found yourself overwhelmed by His presence and the wonder of who He is? Allowing God to turn our overwhelmed feeling of stress into the overwhelmed experience of His presence and love is where we find our delight in His working power. How are we to be led into this kind of delight and love; how can we lead others into true sincerity of worship?

You can’t lead others into worship, if you haven’t been in worship yourself.

Overwhelmed By the World

The stresses of this life can oftentimes take over our thoughts and we can be overwhelmed with worry, fear, and exhaustion. Scripture provides many examples of this. Job 22:10 says, “Therefore snares are all around you, and sudden terror overwhelms you.” Psalms 55:5 says, “Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me.”

Continuing to dwell on these things can lead us to take our eyes off of the Lord and stop being amazed by who He is. As worship leaders, though, part of our role is to help others be aware of the wonders of God, and provide opportunities to be overwhelmed by Him in worship.

“As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.” – Mark 9.15

If we as worship leaders stop being overwhelmed by Him, it is very hard to lead others into that kind of experience. Be overwhelmed by God in your own life, and then you will be able to lead others into a time of being overwhelmed by Him in corporate worship.

Let His peace overwhelmed and guard you in Christ Jesus. #Phil4.7

Theme of the week:
#Overwhelmed

Overwhelmed by God

In order to take the focus off of ourselves, and truly be overwhelmed by God, a great place to start is God’s Word. Isaiah  43:2 reminds us that “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”

Just as Peter was able to stay above the water when His eyes were on Jesus, as soon as he put his eyes on himself, he failed.

If we are to be overwhelmed by God in the midst of our struggles, we need to keep our eyes on Him. One way we can keep our eyes on the Lord is to recognize God’s handiwork all around us in the wonders of His creation.

In the song “Overwhelmed” by Big Daddy Weave, it says, “I see the work of Your hands Galaxies spin in a heavenly dance oh God All that You are is so overwhelming” The chorus says, “I delight myself in You Captivated by Your beauty I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You” Take time to recognize God’s beauty and power in creation.

Take time to contemplate all that God has done for you, and to spend time in His presence in your own moments of personal, private worship throughout the week.

Run to Him
What is overwhelming you this week? Planning future worship services? Getting ready for a new season of ministry? A relational conflict on the worship team?

There could be many things weighing you down. Give those things to God, and take some time to just be overwhelmed by His love for you, and by the wonder and awe of our God. “And God I run into Your arms Unashamed because of mercy I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You” Let God overwhelm you by His working power, so you may be able to lead others into times of worship that is authentic and unashamed by His mercy.
