Leading Worship Is Learning To Follow

2-28-16#Learning2Follow

God does not rate your worship leading, neither should you. He is using you to make a difference in your church – more than what others say and more than what you realize. Worship is for God, not for man. When we worship, we are changed and transformed into Christ’s likeness because we were made to worship – being made in His image.

“If you only knew what God gives,” Jn 4.10. Jesus presents a challenge to the woman at the well in order for the subsequent revelation of her seeing Jesus for who He really is and for her life to be changed – to place all things under His authority to worship Him. Look at this verse of worship, led by David in Psalm 119: 175: “Let me live that I may praise you, and may your laws sustain me.”

Now Hear This:
You can hear the heart of David in this prayer. His lips overflow with praise in thanking God for his decrees. His commands are so treasured that David sings of His word.

He makes a request for protection, forgiveness and redemption. If you were to set this text to melody and music, it would literally be a sung prayer to God. It’s honesty and biblical expression can move the heart of the worshiper.Yes, there is a way to make our services and place of worship conducive to worship. We want the worshiper to explore and nurture a heart of worship in an environment that ushers praise, pause, energy and reverence. But if this becomes our only focus, it will be the only thing we have.

We all have our styles: rock, gospel, traditional, pop, country, world, etc. We are encouraged by Paul in #1Cor9.22 “be all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.” We can apply this verse bringing relevancy to our services and the public outreach events. However, Paul here is talking about winning people through relationships. Here’s the problem on relying on the Church or the Show to accomplish ministry.

It’s only 1-2 hours out of the week, filtered by ads, announcements, programs, etc. People cannot rely on the one hour experience per week to augment their growth in God. The Lord wants all of us – every day. This would be like only speaking with your spouse, children or loved one, for only one hour per week.

If you never spoke to them Mon through Sat, but only on the one hour on Sunday, how much of a relationship would you have?

Worship & Ministry Happens Every day

Worship goes beyond the service. The music we play is great in the four walls, but how can God knock down our squares so that the love of His Spirit pours out into every day living in society. Leading worship is truly about leading relationships. Leading worship is not about your stage and how cool you look.

Lead worship that points to how cool Jesus looks. What the Lord is doing in your life and the life of your church. You have more of an opportunity than what you realize to minister – don’t keep it confined to the show or the four walls. God wants our hearts. He desires worship that is pure, unhindered and free.

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.” #Psalm73.25
“Go now, the men among you, and serve the LORD, for that is what you desire.” #Ex10.11
“So shall the king greatly desire your beauty: since he is your Lord, worship him.” #Psalm45.11
“In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God” #1Tim2.8  Above all: I think Joshua said it best, when it comes to man and the worshiping house of God:

“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” #Josh24.15
