Making the Most of it.

For worship leaders, signers and musicians, we go through each week chasing the golden Sunday service. While leading services and making music is great, is this the only goal set before us? God has made you more than just for Sunday.

Finding purpose is more than asking questions and seeking answers. Your purpose is found in what you are doing in the here and now – as God provides. How are you making the most of it? No matter how long you have been in ministry, leading worship, or in another vocation, there is always room for improvement. No matter if you are thriving or just below surviving, the truth is, no one ever arrives.

Most of us seem to live in the blur between surviving and thriving. We hit a few good points and miss a few others. Good news? We need the ups and downs to depend on Christ as He is our Victory. There is no perfect worship leader besides Jesus Himself. God is not looking for perfection, He is looking for those to walk in His perfect love.

Never Stop Learning We encourage worship leaders in our Mentoring Program about two major things: (1) you never stop growing, and (2) you are not finished yet. The number of years you have led worship is irregardless, when it compares to what God has for you today. You cannot build on past success or get hung up on failure. The opportunity that God gives is TODAY. Here is a list of things that each worship leader can be working on to achieve the greatest results possible.

1. Never Stop Growing – Remember you never arrive, but must always continue to improve. Here are some questions to ask yourself. Are you practicing your playing and singing on a daily basis?  Are you taking lessons and improving your craft and leadership? Are you changing and growing with the new trends, styles, and songs?

2. Develop Your Organizational and Admin Skills – It’s easy just to throw things together at the last minute, but becoming more organized will definitely be a benefit to your work. Ask yourself: Are you writing (or buying) great charts for your band? Are you running organized and productive rehearsals? Are you creating timely schedules for your musicians and planning ahead on the church calendar?

3. Keep Working On A Good Relationship With Your Pastor – The relationship between the Worship Leader and Pastor is one of the most critical relationships in the church. Do you have a regular meeting with your pastor? Are you supporting your pastor in private and public? Have you ever had your pastor and his wife over for dinner?

4. Take Time to Mentor New LeadersAre you looking for and developing the potential leaders on your team? Are you giving room for new leaders to lead a song or worship time? Jesus spent over 3 years developing His team. Are you following His example?

5. Develop a Great Team – Build those around you up to develop the best team possible. Do you have a system for bringing along new musicians? Are you developing multiple musicians for each position? How are you helping your team grow spiritually?

Love God and Love Others

6. Increase Your Passion for Worshipping God – Worship God with all your heart, on the stage and off. Questions to ask: Are you keeping it real? Be authentic, are you the same on and off the stage? Are there areas in your life that are holding you back from God’s richest blessings? Do you love the Lord with all your heart and are you a passionate worshipper?

7. Love The Church Like Jesus Loves The Church – Love God’s people he has put in your path. Ask yourself: Are you building God’s kingdom or yours? Do you love the people you are leading? Jesus laid down His life for us, are you willing to lay down your life?

8. Love Your Spouse and Family – Where does your family fit in with your ministry? Are you carving out regular time in your schedule for your spouse and family? Are you taking one day of Sabbath rest a week? When is the last time you had a date with your spouse?

9. Love and Spend Time with God Daily – Finally, the most important questions to ask: Are you reading your Bible daily?  When is the last time you memorized a Bible passage? How is your prayer life? Are you praying and obeying?

My Victory Your purpose is to seek, walk and obey God’s will. The application of your vocation may look different. You can be a worship leader, songwriter, engineer, etc. He always provides the path, but what He wants from you is the obedience to walk in His ways first.

Don’t be overwhelmed after reading this list.  It would be easy to read this list and get discouraged. Instead, just pick one or two areas that stood out the most to you, and plan to work on just those areas. We will always have room for improvement in our role as the worship leader, but we already have the complete victory we need in Jesus Christ.
