Leading Your Team Individually

3_29_16#BeTheTeam There is no one right way in working with people: on your worship team and in the church. But how do you handle the many different types of musicians and singers in your team? How do you lead them into being one team for the benefit of the body?

We have different stereo types and jokes per musician and singer. How do you deal with the differences in your worship team to make a difference for the church?

More than what you realize, and no matter the difference you feel, God has placed you there in your church and team to set the example.

“Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.” – Prv29.18

It starts with you

You are the leadership model to your team. You maybe thinking that you don’t have those qualities and why would you be an example. Well, let’s put it this way, why did God not call somebody else – he called and chose you. Jesus said in John 15:16: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit–fruit that will last–and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” We are appointed to not only do the works of God, but to go, grow and bear fruit. He chose us to do what? To present fruit to the Father for the work of the Kingdom – not for our kingdom. His Kingdom – this perspective should become the focus to why and what we do.

The Kingdom of God is our priority, not the ultimate/future goal, but the only goal. Our job is to help others put the focus on the Kingdom and not their own – this starts with us as well. Who’s Kingdom is your focus and goal?

It starts with them
Each of us our responsible. The art of leading a team, is to lead them individually and them by combining them into one group. What we have to get down, is learning that each person is different.

How you lead one person, will not be the same for the next. Get to know your team individually. Learn what makes them tick, from the music they enjoy, things they like, how they communicate and how they play. All of this will give you greater insight into leading them – both relationally and musically.

If you have a guitarist who is heavy into Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Sach, then get to know their music, appreciate where they are coming from. If your drummer favors Bonham, Chad Smith, Vinnie Colaiuta, check out their influences. Find out more in the same way from your bassist and pianist, etc.

The better you understand their musical makeup, the better you can shape your band together. [ctt template=”10″ link=”QvC7y” via=”no” ]The creativity is already there, your job is to bring it together.[/ctt]

It begins and ends with God
Through your local church, God is active in leading your worship. When we take time to get the music of our hearts and instruments right, the flow of God is uninterrupted. To lead as one is also to function as one. There is nothing more debilitating than any member that hinders the Body and causes injury.

Even a single team member can disturb the moment of worship. This can happen by attitudes, habitual music mistakes and uncorrected technical errors.

The church is paying attention and when issues under our leadership go array, it affects the Body. Yes, God is in charge and can correct our wrongs, but we are still responsible. [ctt template=”10″ link=”Sm455″ via=”no” ]Our leadership is to honor what the Lord has entrusted us.[/ctt]

As we make every effort to serve God by adhering to the right priorities, He makes everything possible through our abilities and willingness. Amazing things happen to the worship life of the Church, when we get out of the way. Lives are impacted and hearts are touched when we allow God to have His way.

We also see the fruit in our team when we allow love and humility to pave our walk in the Spirit. Gal 5.22 The resurrection power of Jesus gives us every opportunity to make change. But there’s one thing that will keep you from change: procrastination.

Get it started. Do not wait for thing to change themselves, it will never start itself. Jesus did not put off the cross, neither God did not put off accomplishing the victory through raising Jesus from the dead.

If he has given us the promised Holy Spirit, and we are in His power, then we do not need to procrastinate, when knowing that it is His power and not our own. Make the right changes, make them right now.   A rocket expends most of its energy at lift of, but when it takes flight at the right altitude, it soars effortlessly on its own.
