Is Worship a Gig?

Where is your heart when it comes to leading worship? Is it just a church gig, is it just a title, or is it something more? God has provided a way for you to do music in the church, but worship must come first through the heart. How is your ministry an offering to God, rather than just a title to claim?

He is your prize. There are certain things to consider as we lead worship. As a worshiper, what do you see about what God is saying from this passage of Isaiah, when it comes to leading worship? Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53: 4-6) Nobody can experience victory by themselves; we are never alone and never without help.

Not one of us is good enough, strong enough or wise enough. As we consider the song “My Victory” this week, we are reminded of where our victory comes from. No one can experience victory by themselves.

Victory in Jesus As Isaiah 53 says, “We all, like sheep have gone astray…” It’s as if we were on the path to victory, but we just couldn’t stay on the right path. We always seem to wander off into the weeds. We are incapable of making the right decisions. Ultimately, the only way for us to get back on that path to victory is to recognize what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

Back in Isaiah 53 it says, “But he was pierced for our transgressions…” We need to put our faith in what Jesus has done for us. Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
It is not enough to just acknowledge what Jesus did on the cross to provide the victory, we must also put our faith in Him.

Victory Through the Gospel

There are some worship leaders who treat leading worship as a gig. It’s only a way of making money. There are others who volunteer because it’s a title.

Leading worship is a calling, a service to God and the church. One of the challenges of leading worship is to make the Gospel a centerpiece to our worship leading. Without Jesus as the center of our worship it is too easy to focus on ourselves.

The reality is that not a single one of us has earned the right to lift up the Lord in worship. It is only because of what Jesus did on the cross and the faith that we have in Him that we serve.

Heart Check

So again, where is your heart when it comes to leading worship? Your call as a worship leader is not to make it a career, it is to join in the calling that God placed upon your life. You are in the people business, the transaction of grace and the process of producing fruit, which results in praising God for His Victory.
