Stop Crying About Why They Don’t Sing (Show #34)

#HelpThemWorship (Video Below)

In the worship leading of your church you pray, prepare and work hard. You pray for your church, you try to encourage them during worship, and even try to see the good in all people. But what if they just don’t get it? Why do we get so bothered or upset if they do not sing? Is it really about us, or is it really about us?

#BeLedByGod Is It Really About Us #1?
One of the main things we miss as worship leaders, teams and pastors is believe and trust that it’s really about God. Yes, we pray and act as if God is in control. But when things go south, why do we blame ourselves and/or others? This should be a good indication of where we originally put our trust.

How much of the time are we spending preparing for worship, that it turns into worshiping the worship? The problem of worship started since time began. Again and again, God’s people turned away from His Authority to worship themselves and false idols. In Psalms 97.7 David addresses Who is our priority of worship: “All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols– worship him, all you gods!”

It’s not about us. Worship is about God. The more we focus on Who we are preparing for and allow Him to move through us, the more we get out of the way. The service belongs to God, we are just stewards of it.

The One Side Of Why People Don’t Sing:

it’s a spiritual issue. Never mistake someone else’s worship. Just because they do not sing, doesn’t mean they are not worshipping. Just because they are not moving their mouths, doesn’t mean their hearts are not praying  or their spirits are not souring. People have different ways in  responding to God in worship. Yes, there are those who choose not to respond. Your responsibility is to help guide people, not please everyone. Each person is accountable to God – this is a given. For the hearts of those who may have trouble lifting their spirit and voice, how can we help them?

What if they just don’t get it?

Then help them. The problem is not how well you prepare your service, the issue is the lack of preparing for people. How are you making time and room for them? When they enter your worship space, where are your thoughts? I know for me I am thinking about technical issues to get the band/audio/visual started, however, our people come first. Before a note is played, twenty minutes is spent being with people.

This ranges from those in my team and church guests and members entering the church. We need to be thinking about the souls, not the system. The better we know our people, the better we can lead them. Once we have this focus, our eyes are drawn to Who is more important and the people He gave us.

Is It Really About Us #2?

We need to take responsibility. We need to take care of our own leadership and pull-up our own boot straps in the strength of God. Stop whining. Stop complaining. If people are not singing in your church then ask the tough questions: What is it that we are doing? How are we in the way?

What needs to change? How can God work through us to help our people? Galatians 6.4 reminds us: “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else,”

The Other Side Of Why People Don’t Sing:

it’s a technical issue. Let’s get something straight: If your music is too loud they cannot hear the words there is no emphasis on the main melody/vocal if there is inadequate visual/screen support if there is inefficient audio support if there are too many new/unknown songs if the songs are too wordy if the songs are unsingable if there is no congregational focus-support if there is no God central focus support – people will stop singing. Change what you are doing. Give up the control. Allow the Lord to lead you.

Let go of what you think is better. Listen to your people. Do what is best for them – not you. In every effort serve them in a way that goes beyond a casual service. Let your serving of people become an act of worship unto God.

The number one job of a worship team is to help them worship. God made you worship leader / worship team to hear the songs he is singing and to sing them back into your church. The more you consider those in worship above the preferences, the more you meet them in prayer to God.

We sing songs of brokenness, deliverance and freedom. They both minister to the heart and to the Lord. As we help them worship, we bring more focus unto God. The more focus and rightful attention unto God, the more people will worship and sing – from a thankful and authentic heart
