Overwhelmed To Sing (Show #57)

8-3-16#Overwhelmed (Video Below)

4.5 min read

What’s in a song?

Are we really praying and living the lyrics we sing in response to the Bible, or are we just going through the motions? In a worship service, we see the same faces who sing and who don’t sing. How different would it be if you were to see everyone in your church sing, worship and pray?

Would this be accomplished by a new song; or, could it come from God renewing the heart from the songs we sing? Truth is your people do worship, it’s just that everyone has their own way. What’s yours? Each of us are responsible to bringing God his worship first. Especially when it comes to our songs, God desires to hear us sing. Most of all, He is concerned about the quality of our hearts and the meaning of our words.

It’s truly more than words

As you may have seen, this week’s theme and study is on “Overwhelmed.” We are also using the song “Overwhelmed” by Mike Weaver and Phil Wickham as we illustrate a few points below in how God desires us to view Him and ourselves – especially when it comes to living life as a worshiper. Let’s begin with the lyrics and by each section dive deeper into the words and their Biblical application.

Great lyrics have a way of working through the heart to evoke sung prayer. #Overwhelmed

Looking into the song…

Verse 1a: I see the work of Your Hands Galaxies spin in a Heavenly dance oh God All that You are is so overwhelming Psalm 102.25 says: “In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.” What if you were to stand before Holy God, seeing His work in forming creation. Would it not overwhelm you?

The fact that all the stars spin in their wonder; it’s a marvel to witness the work of His hands. Psalm 89.6 even says: ” For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD?” Nothing and no one compares to our God. Not catastrophe nor evil, not worldly beauty or riches; but only the deep love of the Lord.

Even among the galaxies, God’s compassion endlessly pursues man. There is no darkness that can escape Him. There’s no other kind of mercy that can uncover our hiding. Are you allowing Him to come and find you?

Verse 1b: I hear the sound of Your Voice All at once it’s a gentle and thundering noise oh God All that You are is so overwhelming Joel 3.16 tells us: “The LORD’s voice will roar from Zion and thunder from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth will shake.”

If you were to hear God speak in this, would you not quiver in your soul? Yet at the same time, His voice is as gentle as a whisper and mightier than any other sound. Another thing that comes to mind is allowing the Lord to speak.

Are you still enough to listen? Are your eyes and ears open to see His faithfulness at work? Even in times when we feel God is out of touch, He is more closer than we realize. Joel 2.11 reminds us that we are always surrounded by the heavenly forces of God: “The LORD raises His voice in the presence of His army.” Psalm 29.4: “the voice of the LORD in power, the voice of the LORD in splendor.”

If you sense you are not hearing the voice of the Lord, maybe you need to pause long enough to let His silence speak. Be reminded you are His child.

Be reminded that He is constantly speaking to your heart. Let these words fall upon you, recognizing of your adoption in Him as He says: “Can any living thing hear the voice of the living God from the heart of the fire as we did and yet survive?” Duet.5.26 Even more so, the voice of God still burns in our hearts today, as its always been. Look at the song’s verse again, what Biblical impacts do you see. How can they cause you to sing with all your soul?

Chorus: I delight myself in You Captivated by Your beauty I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You God, I run into Your arms Unashamed because of mercy I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You There is no other power that can eclipse the Presence of God.

His ability to captivate us is simply overwhelming. No matter what the world and its power may convey, there is no other salvation apart from Jesus. Is this not worth singing about?

We find our delight in the Lord. #Overwhelmed   “Trust in the LORD and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.” Psalm 37.3-5 When we delight ourselves in the Lord, he gives us the desires of our hearts. What are these desires? The goodness, faithfulness, mercy and righteousness that only comes from God. We are not ashamed because He is proud to call us His children.

We are not ashamed because He took our shame, guilt and sin and nailed it to the cross. His forgiveness and grace is truly overwhelming, what other act of love can compare? “For I am not ashamed of the Good News. It is God’s power which is at work for the salvation of every one who believes–the Jew first, and then the Gentile.” Rom. 1.16

“To make music and worship His name is a gift that goes beyond our words.” @BranonDempsey

Verse 2: I know the power of Your Cross Forgiven and free forever You’ll be my God And all that You’ve done is so overwhelming Romans 6.6 says: “This we know–that our old self was nailed to the cross with Him, in order that our sinful nature might be deprived of its power, so that we should no longer. It is by His power that defeated death. In receiving His love and salvation, we are alive in Christ, by the power of His resurrection and the Holy Spirit. It is no longer I who lives, but Christ who lives within me (Gal. 2.20). “After he had finished his work, he became the source of eternal salvation for everyone who obeys him.” Heb 5.9 God chose you out of creation to be saved through His sanctifying work (2 Thess 2.13). It is not by your work, but by faith and grace through Christ. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” Eph. 2.8

Chorus Repeats:
(same lyrics as above) There is a heavy emphasis on why the author (we) are overwhelmed because of His power over death, His love and mercy to forgive, His life that defeated evil and the grave and the everlasting power of God that works within us through the Holy Spirit. How could these truths not be overwhelming? How they do cause our hearts to sing of thankfulness and praise!

Bridge: And God I run into Your arms Unashamed because of mercy I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You You are Beautiful, You are Beautiful As the Father seeks the son who was lost; God sees us from afar, is filled with compassion, runs to us and embraces us in His love. (Luke 15.20).

We are His sons and daughters. You are a child of the King. We have these reminding truths of His Word: Psalm 86:5,15 “For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy” Psalm 103:10-13 “He has not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our sins.” Ephesians 2:13,17 “But now in Christ Jesus you who sometimes were far off are made near” With this kind of love and deep compassion from God, we are truly overwhelmed by heart, mind and soul.

The fact that we are alive is a gift from God, how much more that we are His children and invited to walk with Him in fellowship? “Overwhelmed” Lyrics by: by Mike Weaver and Phil Wickham

You can never escape the melody of Christ Where ever you find yourself in life, remember these truths of God above that sings over you of His salvation and presence (Zeph. 3.17). Sing from the soul, make melody from the heart and worship Him by sung prayer. We give Him worth because of Who He is and His acts of love on man’s behalf. We are overwhelmed by His love for us.

Theme of the week:
#Overwhelmed

This is why we are to give attention to the words we sing. Find their meaning and derive their intent. Music is powerful and words are meaningful. So our worship matters to God, because our lives and words matter to Him also.
