Compassion Over Complaining

Many people come to church expecting to sing songs, pray, hear a message and maybe even gain some experience in worship. Then they go home. This happens to us all, worship team and leaders included. The question is: how are we changing, or are we going through the motions?

Unfortunately, it goes in one ear and out the another. Nothing changes. We get upset about our church or things in the church and then complain. People go home frustrated.

What’s really going on is deeper

They complain because they see something still missing in their lives – unmet needs. Maybe they do not see the bigger picture of what God is trying to work out. In their frustration they wonder and ask God why. This includes us all. There is, undoubtedly, a disconnect.

I believe this is one of the major problems in the Church today: choice and value. Joshua made it clear of Whom we should choose in Josh 24.15: But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living.

But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” As you recall, the Israelites were constantly complaining. They also turned away from God and choose other things than God. They valued idolic worship; in a nutshell, the worship of God and their relationship with Him was no longer a value. People want to feel good, look good and hear good. They don’t want things that aren’t easy because it requires work.

Even people in your church and/or ministry have resorted to making excuses, showing lack of commitment and venting their complaints.

What does the Bible say about this?
“and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” #Heb10.24-25

So why do we complain about church?
God introduced the first commandment in #Exodus20.3 “You shall have no other gods before me.” This was a direct command and a call to worship. God did not need fame from man; he wanted the heart of man. “Happy is the man who fears the LORD, taking great delight in his commands.” #Psalm112.1 God wants man for Himself as his delight and fellowship. He saved mankind, cleaned and took them in.

God saw the value in man in order to save him – as he still loves, saves and values man today. The value we place on God is expressed through our worship, our serving and our behavior.

How Do We Help The Disconnected?
Even when things don’t feel close, we base our relationship with God on the truth of His word. It’s not perfect, it’s faith. This is what we encourage others in their walk. As Col. 3.16 instructs, we: “Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you.” When we keep in step with His word, we are able to truly lead with true connectedness. We are walking in His word, not perfect, but by the power of His spirit.

As the passage continues, we are are to be: “teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.” – Col. 3.16b Comfort others in the same way God comforts you (Ref. 2Cor. 1.4). Truth is, you never know who walks through those doors and what trouble they may be inwardly facing. The true way of ministering is through a transparent heart of empathy.

Theme of the week:
#ClosenessWithGod

Because you allow the Holy Spirit to lead you, you are able to lead others in the same connectedness. When the congregation sees transparency from the leader, they become more inclined/influenced to look within their hearts.

Our hope and prayer is that we can exemplify what it means to have a contrite and connected heart to God. Also, we reflect an honest relationship that overflows into worship.

“The authenticity of your spirit, leads more than just music.” @BranonDempsey

How do we help turn complaints into compassion?
The human heart, needs another human to help lead them to Salvation. This is the reason why Jesus said: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13.35 How much more effective in the way we lead worship, serve our community and live globally?

We show compassion instead of complaining. Whether by song, fellowship, prayer, extending a hand to the wounded, we are to help people be led in relationship first. We choose worship, we choose God and choose the right things of Him – as our spiritual priority. Help model what worship means.

Lead your people by being connected in Christ first. Together, we are able to truly respond to God by our love for one another. We make the choice and action to respond to God by the kind of lives we are to live – in the holiness and closeness of Christ. A response of worship that does not complain. @BranonDempsey @worshiptt
