Missional Worship:

Impacting Others, Changing Us By Dwayne Moore I’ll never forget how strongly prompted I felt to pray. It was in April of 2015, and I was on a long flight from Johannesburg to Atlanta. My team and I were returning from doing worship conferences in several regions of Zambia.

My body was spent from all the traveling and teaching, and I’d looked forward to some much-needed sleep. Yet, I couldn’t get off my mind the faces of the worship leaders I’d met. They were so excited and hungry to learn. They were like sponges soaking up everything they could about how to lead and how to impact others through worship.

During those 15 hours of flying, I couldn’t sleep, and I didn’t watch any movies. Instead, I kept praying over and over, “Lord, I know there’s more that needs to be done to help these leaders, but how? I don’t have the time or the money to make umpteen trips to Africa to lead more conferences. I know they need resources and training, but what can I do? I’m just one guy!” Finally, the Lord broke through to me on that long plane ride and said, “Dwayne, quit thinking ‘I’ and starting thinking ‘we.’

He reminded me of the hundreds of worship leaders in our Next Level Worship community. They are skilled and knowledgeable leaders with so much to offer, if only they were given the opportunity. For the remainder of that flight I wrote out the details of what has now become our unique Sponsorship Program, where we connect US worship leaders to worship leaders in Africa for 6 months of online encouragement and one-on-one mentoring. The decision to invest in worship leaders both in the US and internationally marked the beginning of Next Level Worship’s commitment to “missional worship.”

What is Missional Worship? For years I’ve had the conviction that our worship should lead us to witness, that worship was never meant to be kept to ourselves but to be shared. In fact, our books and resources teach that one hasn’t experienced “next level worship” until he or she is sharing the faith and pouring into others. Worship is missional in that it transforms us to think beyond ourselves. In a vision, Isaiah saw a heavenly worship service where the Lord was high and lifted up.

Not only was Isaiah personally touched and changed through this worship experience, he was also motivated to go and tell others about the Lord. Worship is missional in that our worship can impact those around us. Paul and Silas sang praises to God in their jail cell at midnight, and it helped lead to the salvation of the jailer and his family. Our worship becomes missional when we reach out and help other worship leaders be more effective in leading worship. Deepening a worship leader’s personal worship and leadership can affect not only his or her worship team, but also the church and community.

Lasting Impact In the short time we’ve been sponsoring worship leaders we’ve already seen the impact missional worship can have—both on them and on us. Suzanne and Lucy are good examples. Lucy is a pastor’s wife and the main worship leader at her church in Zambia. Suzanne was her US sponsor. “Sponsoring Lucy has had a profound effect on me,” Suzanne said.

“Our lives have changed through knowing each other.” Lucy echoed that: “Though I’d led worship for 15 years, I did not know much about it until God connected me to Suzanne…I am now passing on to many others what I’ve been taught. My life will never be the same! I know Zambia will never be the same!” Such impact as this can only come through prayer and a God-given burden. God may lead you in a different direction than He did me. He may give you a different idea of how you and your worship team can reach out to others.

But one thing’s for certain: Whether we take our worship across the sea or across the street, we must take it outside the walls of our church—to a world that desperately needs to see our praise and trust in the Lord.
