Let Your Amens Ring!

As a worshiper there is something meaningful and comforting about singing our prayers. As a musician and singer, it’s even more powerful as we use the skills God gave us to pray through our music. How can you better guide the congregation through your craft as your heart is in worship?

Or maybe the question is really: is your heart in worship and how is it reflective in your skill? The way you play as a team will help guide and build the worship. Your talent and skill, like your instrument/voice is a tool for God in worship. You never see a craftsman using every tool out of the box, he selects the right instrument for the right application. This is very true in creating great music. Don’t use all your tricks and don’t musically stand in the way of others.

The stronger we lead as a team, the stronger we pray as a church.

That is followed by a beautiful “Amen” section, combining the old with the new. This version gives the church today a brand new way to use this classic hymn of praise. “Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.” (Psalm 98:1)

Looking Closer at “Doxology”

  1. Notice in verse 1, it’s nothing but acoustic guitar and pad.
  2. The vocal stands out with nothing in the way
  3. Not all instruments are playing – each resting
  4. As the 1st Chorus builds so does the anticipation
  5. The band crescendos into the Chorus
  6. At the Interlude is the first time everyone plays
  7. Verse 2: The drums and bass set the ground rhythm
  8. The instruments lay back on the verse
  9. The Chorus Section (second time) is Full
Lay back your tone, lay out a few measures (trust me, no one will die) and hear what’s happening in the music. The more you listen to parts, the better you will find your own voice. When you find your place, compliment musically to the group – do not overplay/sing your part. If our spiritual responsibility is to build each other up, so we should do the same musically for the sake of His worship and the worship of His people.

As we take a deeper into the look of Doxology, we can also find the meaning of giving God our Amens. In other words, Doxology is typically an expression of praise sung to the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is common in high hymns for the final stanza. When we sing a doxology, we are declaring by faith what God has done, is doing and will do. What is your Doxology to sing?

How are you allowing the words of faith play and sing through your instrument?

“In Christ: live what you sing and sing what you live.” @BranonDempsey

Recap

Finally, try this song with your band and singers. Ask them for input, get their buy-in as you try to become one with the selected songs. If the people just hear music, but don’t see they way we connect, how will it encourage them to pray?
