Fear Factor

No matter how many years someone has been part of a worship team, most people would probably admit they still get a little nervous before going onto the platform. Fear, anxiety, nervousness, and a lack of confidence are a real concern to many, whether they like to admit it or not.

Whether you are a younger worship leader who is just getting started, a singer or band member, or someone who has been doing it for many years, God’s Word gives us hope that we can do all things through Christ (Philippians 4:13), and that His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

This week at Worship Team Training, we will be using the song “The Greatness of Our God” as our theme song, and this song gives us many ways we can overcome our fear and rely on God’s strength. [tweetthis]In our weakness, Christ’s power is made perfect.[/tweetthis]

Strengthened By God’s Word

Fear does not need to be a factor as we lead worship. Several Scripture verses speak to this: “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV). “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10 ESV). “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” (Psalm 56:3-4 ESV).

Still, in those moments before walking on to the platform, or maybe it’s when we are leading the song, or speaking in-between the songs, it is easy to let fear take over, and affect our leading. So first, just remember what God’s Word says about fear. He is with us; He gave us a spirit of power, not of fear. What can man do to us? We trust in God, whose Word we praise. Second, try to identify what is giving you the most fear. Is it fear of failing? Fear of the people? Fear of something else?

In each of these cases, God’s Word provides an answer. Practically speaking, a lack of preparation might lead to fear. If you walk on to the platform to lead the congregation, and you have not put the time in to prepare the music, the band, the lyrics, and the transitions, fear might set in. In that case, the greater the preparation, the greater the confidence.

To alleviate that type of fear, just be sure to take the time needed to prepare. Aside from that, if you have prepared and have all of the music ready, and you are as prepared as you can be, then at that point, if fear sets in, just remember to trust in God, and that He is with you. Remember the greatness of our God!

He Is Greater

A great example of this thought process can be found in this week’s song “The Greatness of Our God”. This song reminds us that when we are feeling anxious, or afraid, all we have to do is consider God’s greatness, and look at things from His perspective. Verse 1: “Give me eyes to see more of who you are May what I behold still my anxious heart Take what I have known and break it all apart You my God are greater still” When you are anxious, gaze at God.

When we see more of who He is, our anxious hearts will be stilled. Our perspective will be broken apart when we see things from His perspective. Verse 2: “Give me grace to see beyond this moment here To believe that there is nothing left to fear And that You alone are high above it all You my God are greater still” Our fear comes from looking at the moment.

We need God’s grace to see beyond the temporary, momentary things that fear us, and to see that He is greater than it all; He is high above our fears, and He is on our side. Chorus: And no sky contains No doubt restrains all You are The greatness of our God I spend my life to know And I’m far from close to all You are The greatness of our God When we remember the greatness of our God, our fears, doubts, and insecurities should fall away when we see things from His perspective. In the Name of the Lord, we have a strong tower through which we are safe.

Nothing Can Separate Us

After you have prepared to the best of your ability, then let go and trust in God’s greatness. Trust in His love for you, and the spirit of power that He has put in us, not fear. Whether you are singing on the team, playing in the band, operating in the tech booth, or leading the team, fear can easily creep in.

Let His greatness shine through our weakness. Just remember the promises in His Word. The bridge of “The Greatness of Our God” refers to one other Scripture that can fuel our confidence when fear rises up. “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39 ESV).
