What is the true path for music and ministry success?| Ep. 225

You CAN do all things (Phil 3.14)

FROG
Branon Dempsey

  • Don't dwell on your weakness, everybody else is doing that for you. If you want to start accomplishing your ministry goals you need to understand that your personal DNA, a.k.a your “spiritual walk,” is what you trade from in your music and ministry life.

As most people’s stress and anxiety in life stems from where they will potentially work or spend the majority of their adult life, trying to pay the bills and support themselves or their family. This is no different for the artist, musician, singer or worship leader. The other half of the battle is how can I be successful at my God-given art, while making a living?

So whether you do art/ministry for fun, you would like to be compensated, gain sales, or just make a living, you do not need a golden carrot, you just have to eat the frog.

What does eat the frog mean?

My wife studied in France / they eat frogs
It's not the most pleasurable if not accustomed
But you don't think about it, just eat it.

Eat the Frog - is a business allegory I learned back in college. It simply means, you do the tough thing first and do it anyway - like eating a real frog.

So here's what I've come up with:
F - Filter
R - Reach
O - Outgrow
G - Grind

1. Filter Out

- Discern for your self what is Fact versus False.

Identity: Know Who You Are First, and know who you're not.
You have to understand your own personal DNA.

Don’t do things because Jesus Culture, Phil Whickham, or Kari Jobe tried it.

You first need to know what you can do and start doing it. You need to know your personal ministry and stay true to it.

Why so many artists, worship leaders, etc are not where they need to be because they compare themselves.

Spend too much time on Instagram, too much time wishing to do what others are seen doing, and yet not doing anything, then blaming God for not doing it.

Have no expectations of others - bear your own load

Scripture: Galatians 6:5

2. Reach

- Reach for the top.

Always challenge yourself
Aspire for the top
The reason why most people don't get there is because they give up
Invite the challenge to learn
Invite the venerability to understand
Invite the victory that comes through humility

Always push yourself
Even if you don't like it - do it anyway
Discipline is learned, not earned
My father told me to "look it up."
Make your head and heart sweat for muscle and spirit

Always look up
There is a real foundation to set the blueprint on things like happiness, perseverance, empathy, kindness, hard work, gratitude and satisfaction. But you will never reach your goals if you are trying to compete by cutting corners.

Don't look to building a legacy, start building the dream
Legacy is leaving something about you
Charity is helping someone build something about them

You need to study congregation attention and try to reverse engineer what people care about in culture.

Why is this important? Because you begin to connect to the things that God gave you to what other people value - you're building a bridge.

If we begin to build the bridge between culture and Jesus, why not let Him use the art He gave you - for His purposes?

Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:5

3. Outgrow

- Outgrow your skills because your old ones are not working, learn new ones.

Learn to play the long-game

Too many people focus on how to get from point to point
But their vision lacks the long-haul
This erodes perspective and priority
Outgrow your short-term vision

Invest into others
Teach what you learn - constantly
Watch your skills grow exponentially
(When you) Start giving-away what you learn
Outgrow the Dead Sea

Develop your sense of self-discipline
Become an architect of collaboration
Give credit to others above yourself
Outgrow your silos

Scripture: Galatians 6:6

4. Grind

- Keep your wheels to the ground

Hustle and pivot everyday
Create time you do not have
Carve-out the distractions
Limit social media time, etc
Instead Amazon, buy wisdom
Instead of iTunes, get knowledge

Practice everyday
- You may be surprised at what 10m per day will grant you.

Write everyday
- Track your progress
- Write goals
- Evaluate
- Reinstate measures

Produce everyday
- Create your art
- Good / bad - doesn't matter
- Lots of stuff needs to come out

Develop everyday
- Reshape your vision
- Review your goals while practicing
- Pivot around unnecessary time waters
- Keep your head down to the goalie
- Keep your head-up to Jesus

Scripture: Philippians 3:14

Conclusion

So eat the FROG

F - Filter - Know who you are / what you're not
R - Reach - Reach for the top / push yourself
O - Outgrow - Your skills / dev. new
G - Grind - Keep your wheels to the ground

Business friend said to "eat the frog" - bright me back to my wife's experience in France

In the opportunities that God gives
- You go for it
- Don't waste time
- Don't complain
- Don't compare
- Don't wait
- Just eat the FROG
