The Heart of the Worship Musician

Being skilled musicians and singers, is to go beyond the manuscript and into life with God. Our music is the song of the Gospel – are we joining in His Melody? There we find purpose of what it actually means to have the heart of a worship musician. Do you just play your instrument or sing, or do you music from the heart?
When you look deep within the heart of the music, you will find the soul of the musician. The true music that comes from the soul of the musician, must first come from the Spirit of Christ.
How are you making melody of the heart, and not just notes from the pages of black and white? Just because your not professional, doesn’t mean you are not skilled. Who says you don’t need to be skilled? #1Chron25.7 “all of them trained and skilled in music for the Lord.”
When we look through Scripture, in particular the Old Testament, you will find that God takes great delight in music. Also, he placed great delight in the leaders to oversee the music development. Music was not only used for services, but also for battle, individual prayer and soothing the troubled heart. #2Chronicles13:12 #Psalm 144:9 and #1Samuel16:23 How do we adapt what we see in the Bible to modern day music/playing/singing?
Look at how you approach the music and your instrument. Instead of ripping into chords and thrashing-out beats, seek-out what your music needs first.
Pay attention to the little things like dynamics, texture, tone, mood and emotion. YouTube jazz and R&B greats like Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder. You will see in their playing that they are not hasty, very patient, yet they are full of energy. They know what the music calls for and how to delver each note with the right amount of energy.
No, you may not be a professional musician or singer, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t grow in our skill and craft. Again, there is much instruction given in the Old Testament regarding music, because music was held in the highest regard in giving God praise.
Same is true, even more so today. In fact, I believe we are not living in the best times of creative musical art, but we have yet to experience the future. [ctt template=”10″ link=”128hl” via=”no” ]We are to honor the Lord with our gifts and talents. No matter where you think you may be skill-wise – practice.[/ctt] Get good. Polish your craft, hone-in on your skill. When you gather together with your band, learn to effectively collaborate.
Don’t showboat or make it about yourself. Add to what the team is doing. Support the music as you are a single instrument to a greater symphony. [ctt template=”10″ link=”2fBEU” via=”no” ]Remember this, as you give more thought and care to the music, you lead others in greater times of worship.[/ctt] When you do come together for worship, make it more about the Spirit and less about the technicalities.
Make it more about serving the people through prayer and honoring the Lord through song. More than all, our music is a gift and service to the Lord. Not to be made of a god or idol, all good art is to be rendered to God for making music of the Gospel. We create music that serves the Lord and tells His story – or rather, he sings/plays His story through us. “You shall have no other gods before me.” Ex 20.3 As we seek the Lord with all of our hearts, we hear the music He is making, as He lovingly commands us to fall under His direction.
He is the Concert Master of the symphony of sinners. His melody is the peace and forgiveness of Jesus. What better music is there to make? “But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.” Deut. 4.29 So make music from the heart.
Let the song of His word stir your soul as you serve the Lord, each other and the Church. “The Lord will save me, and we will play my music on stringed instruments all the days of our lives, at the house of the Lord.” #Isaiah38:20
