Grow As a Worship Team

For worship leaders, they want their teams to be equipped, but they all know that a proven way to lead worship doesn’t start with the music. Otherwise, the church can’t follow you in worship, if you are not first being led by God.

As the familiar adage says: we must learn to walk before we can run. Our first few steps in finding the freedom to run is to walk happily in Christ.

What about you and your team; are you walking, running or at a stand-still? Healthy things grow. If we expect our teams to continue to excel and grow in effectiveness, it’s important to address any issues that may be at work preventing  a healthy team. Let’s take the next five to look at ways to kick-up the growth and effectiveness of your worship ministry.

1. Walk In Worship

Worship, according to the Bible, is a response to God. It is an act of giving worth and praise to Who He is, what He has done. We also celebrate his daily acts in this life and look with anticipation to The Second Coming. God’s will: to worship and obey are the two things we will do on earth as it is in heaven. Worship is not the lights, stage, look, sound, talent, mix or gear.

If that’s all it is, then it is all that you will have. Before we lead our churches in worship, as worship musicians, singers and leaders, it is critical that we walk in deep fellowship with God.

2. Step In The Song

My friend and Instructor/Mentor at WTT, Rick Muchow said this once: “Singing is breathing.” I find this to be so true in going through my day. Walking in song is like breathing and singing, it’s also walking in prayer. Simply, songs are sung prayers to God.

Take a few of the songs from your current week’s set list and live with them. Bind one of the songs on your heart as you work through out your day. Not only will you be in tune with the song’s lyrics, but you’ll also be subconsciously rehearsing the musical message.

“You are worshiper first, then a musician who leads others in worship second.” @BranonDempsey

3. Walk In Skill

Being called a worship musician brings a great amount of responsibility: commitment, determination and quality. Prioritizing the important over the urgent, will help keep the main thing, the main thing. Commitment has everything to do with keeping your word.

If your pastor asked you to teach a Sunday School class, would you show up unprepared, just to wing it? Skill has everything to do with honoring God by managing our gifts and talents. In essence, why would we do this to our worship ministries and congregation, shouldn’t they deserve our full commitment? We are to prepare and to play skillfully, not carelessly.

4. Step in Rehearsal

Rehearsal time is not practice time. If God gave you the position in your team it is your responsibility to honor your team by honoring their time. The lack of preparation is not someone else’s emergency. Your duty to your ministry is to be prepared for the benefit of your team. When you rehearse, you are investing, working and polishing the unity of your group.

When we rehearse well, by our attitudes, professionalism and skill, the sound we produce will match the aroma of Christ. As a result, the fragrance will become praise to God as it will captivate and lead people to His throne.

5. Walk In Heart

Undivided means: concentrated on or devoted completely to one object. Of course that one object is God. Serving with an undivided heart, is to serve the Lord with all of your being as a living sacrifice (Rom 12.1-2). We are to practice a constant presence of the Lord always; not to justify our position or title in the team.

We are to live a life of worship because He deserves our praise. This is to happen on, off and beyond the stage. You never know the daily impact you have on people, even when you may feel down or things aren’t going right. When you willingly allow God to use you, self is placed aside and ministry begins to happen.

You no longer feel that you are doing it because God is doing it through you. Together with your team, you will run and finish strong.

It Takes A Team

In closing, your team will be influenced by your example. Don’t try to lead all on your own, but strengthen those on your team by working on these five areas.

Like the Dave Brubeck combo, support each other musically as well as spiritually. Take five for yourself and your team for the sake of your ministry.
