Grant Norsworthy | “Lead or Leading Vocals?”

#LeadOrLeadingVocals

Time: 30m video

Should I Embellish the Melody?

As a Worship Leader or Worship Vocalist, do you struggle knowing how to lead a congregation vocally? There is so much you can do to add your creative touch on a song, but how much is too much?

Should a singer embellish the melody to enhance the song, or would that just make it confusing for the congregation to sing?

Join with Today’s Guest: Grant Norsworthy

Learn when it is the right time to use your creative abilities to embellish the melody, and when it is better to leave it be.

Additional Note by Grant: “it’s the melody note range I was talking about (C to C) and not the key of the song. People (the congregation) who have less music theory knowledge may not realize that. The key of the song will dictate what the range is, but the two are not the same.”

DEBRIEF with Branon Dempsey

When Is It the Right Time?

More confident and accomplished vocalists will want to express themselves. Sing songs their way. Embellish. They can find the seductive tug to modify and add to the melody – timing, register, dynamics and more – almost irresistible.

When it’s done well and at the right time, just about everyone loves to hear a great vocalist showing what they can do. But when are the right moments for a singer to highlight their uncommon, God-given abilities? This flow chart helps.
