QUESTIONS:

1. As a worship leader, what is most important to you about having a correct theology of praise?
2. How do you work through the physical ways to praise God?
3. What do you do to encourage others in your team why to praise God?
4. Simply, what is your role as a servant and how do you exhibit this in your ministry?

The following is an excerpt from a new book by Rob Still called “Worship Actions & Attitudes: Understanding 10 Hebrew Words For Praise and Worship”.

What Is Praise? Why Is Praise Important?

One of the primary ways we respond to the revelation of God is by offering praise and thanksgiving. This is an appropriate Biblical response both privately and publicly, in personal individual worship and corporate “gathered” worship.

In scripture, the Hebrew words translated as “praise” or “bless” have a deeper meaning than is conveyed in English. They instruct, command or imply the worshiper is to take specific physical action.

Biblical worship is expressed not only with your whole life (a lifestyle as illustrated by Romans 12:1), but with your whole body as well.

The Biblical model presents corporate praise as a whole group activity.

It is intended for everyone to participate, not spectate.

Throughout scripture there are specific demonstrations of praise to be expressed outwardly.

“Sing!”

“Give thanks”

“Shout for joy”

“Clap your hands”, and so forth.

Praise is to be expressive. Praise is to be seen and heard.

Why? Because God is worthy of all praise (Psalm 145:3). Yes He is. 🙂

Praising God is the good and right thing to do. Yes it is. 🙂

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO PRAISE?

“To praise is to acknowledge. Praising God is acknowledging who He is and what He has done. Praising God is confessing what God has done in the history of salvation. Praising God is confessing what God has done in our lives. We carry out the command to praise the Lord by acknowledging and confessing who God is and what He has done, and in so doing, we render honor and glory to the One who is the object of our praise.”

Dr. Mark D. Futato, “Transformed by Praise” p.8

How Are We To Offer Praise?

We praise the Lord by … Use of the voice:

1. Speaking

My tongue shall declare Your righteousness, and Your praise all the day long. Psalm 35:28

2. Singing

Sing for joy to God our strength; Psalm 81:1

3. Shouting

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. Psalm 100:1

We praise the Lord by … Use of Hands:

1. Lifting Hands

So will I bless You as long as I live;

I will lift up my hands in Your name. Psalm 63:4

2. Clapping

O clap your hands, all you people. Psalm 47:1

3. Playing Instruments

Praise the Lord with trumpet … harp, lyre, tambourine, stringed instruments, flute, cymbals. Psalm 150:3-5

We praise the Lord by … Use of Body:

1. Standing

My body trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws. Psalm119:120

2. Bowing, Kneeling

O come, let us worship and bow down, Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. Psalm 95:6

3. Dancing

Let them praise His name with dancing. Psalm 149:3

Actions speak louder than words.

Your outward expression reveals your inward heart attitude.

Sometimes we don’t feel like worshiping and we have to choose to praise.

Why Should We Praise?

Choosing to engage with God will change your attitude.

God promises to reward those who choose to sincerely and diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6

Sincere participation in the actions of worship changes, transforms and humbles our hearts to produce attitudes of reverence, faith and joy.

Praising God is good for you!

Literally, choosing to praise God is a transformative experience, it renews your mind.

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” Romans 12:2

This is part of the purpose of worship. We position our hearts so that God can change and conform us to the image of Christ. (Romans 8:29)

When you choose to praise the Lord, He will change your perspective.

His presence will transform your lament into joy.

Consider the change in emotional state that happens in Psalm 30:11-12

You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing.

You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy,

that I might sing praises to you and not be silent.

O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever!

Only Almighty God, the one who continually pours out his faithful love forever on His children, has the supernatural power to lift us up from our sad and lonely estrangement, to the place of acceptance and healing.

Praise Is Good For Your Soul

Praising Him is good for your soul.

Not only is praising God the right thing to do, but there is great blessing in it for the worshiper too. Psalm 89:15 promises “blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you”.

There is great blessing for those who “bless the Lord”.
