Key-Bored?

WTT Blog Graphic 9_25_15Bored? You have over 2,500 hundred sounds in that synth and yet not one is appealing to play. What’s that? You only have 5 sounds in that keyboard and feel the same way? Maybe there’s something more than what meets the eye or ear.

If you are playing the same sound (or two) with every note all the time and every time, your keyboard is just as bored as you are. Maybe it’s time to take a step back.

Let your band take over some of the voicings. In other words, we can be so trapped into our own sound that we miss hearing the other instruments around us. Let the guitars take over on the verses, and use that one faithful instrument or note on the chorus. Even there, keep your self from playing every note.

Even by playing 2 or 3 note chords can make a difference. It’s not about playing with all 10 fingers, but playing the right few fingers at the right time and at the right place of the song. You’ll notice the instruments around you fill out the sound to a complete full.

This is another way of playing that encompasses more of your band’s versatility. Think of it as your band becoming part of your sound bank. Okay, so the logistics of expanding your actual sound is just as easy as looking into what you have – not what you don’t have.

Mimic the role of a lead guitar player. One who knows how to weave in and out of the music, by few notes without overplaying. Use more whole notes and less quarters and eighths. Use the Volume dial as a fader when using strings or pad sounds. Switch instruments between sections of the song; i.e. elec. piano on Verses and strings/pad on Choruses – vice versa.

Play overhanging chords or double the bass to compliment the bass player and using pedal tones that work with in the chord structure. Another clue of expanding your sounds is by the help of MIDI and from the comfort of your laptop. For just about $100-200 you can buy new sounds and access them by USB-MIDI all without buying a new board.

When you are able to push yourself in your playing, not only will you become less concerned about sounds, but you will dramatically improve as a wise musician.
