Today’s Power Train Points:
1. Find the original key of the song / listen to the mp3 or locate from the sheet music
2. Find 1-3-5 notes of the Home Key (say we are in the Key of C / find C, E, G). Notice that each note is roughly three notes (or three steps) apart.
3. Figure out which direction you want your new key to sing, either up or down (let’s say A – down from C)
4. On the Home Key (as you did with C), find A and locate the 1, 3, 5 of that new Home Key (A, C, E)
5. Notice that A is three steps down from C. This gives you the number of notes to count to see how far away you are from the original Home Key (C).
6a. Play and hear the notes of A, C, E and see if the song is singable in your range
6b. If this is not your preferred range, try another key either a bit lower or higher to find the desired range. Find the 1-3-5 again in this new key to hear the notes are comfortable
7. You have found your new key 🙂
