Who Do You Choose To Worship? / 1-22-20 Podcast

1 KINGS 18
Worship: True or False?

When we begin to put an emphasis on things apart from Christ, we shift our focus from what is true to what is false. The grass may look greener on the other side, but false gods promise what only the One True God provides.

ONE
Who Will You Worship?

1. Choose today to follow God.
Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing. 1 Kings 18:20-21

Isn’t that like us today?

Waver – what does it mean to waver? To be undecided between two opinions, or possessing an indecision among two different courses of action.

The indecision that Elijah was denouncing was for the people to stop following Baal.

• Stop worshiping what is false.

• Start choosing God

They were being swayed by empty promises that Baal, or that Ahab (or any god), which can never provide.
____

TWO
Choose today to pray to God.

So now Elijah challenges AhabThen you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire — he is God.” Then all the people said, “What you say is good.” – 1 Kings 18:24

“So they took the bull given them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “O Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made. At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” – 1 Kings 18:26- 27

Ahab and his people were praying to a god who was powerless, had no life, It had nothing in him.

Psalm 115 says this about those who choose false worship / praying to a man-made god:

4. Their idols are silver and gold,made by the hands of men.

5. They have mouths, but cannot speak;they have eyes, but cannot see;

6. they have ears, but cannot hear;they have noses, but cannot smell;

7. they have hands, but cannot feel;they have feet, but cannot walk.They cannot even clear their throats.

8. Those who make them become like them,as do all who trust in them.

________

THREE
Choose today to worship God.

At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, O Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord-he is God! The Lord-he is God!” 1 Kings 18:36-39

—So just imagine, this light in the old Testament burns as the sacrifice and glory of God.

Israel now prays to God because they have seen the light / the fire God burned WHEN ALL THE PEOPLE SAW IT: who else does this text include / implies?

All the people, It includes Ahab. – have you ever thought about that??Then Scripture says, They Cried to the Lord and proclaimed: “the Lord-he is God!

—So now, what about the new light of Christ? Do you see the flame the Christ shining inside or on your soul?

When was the last time, or will this be the first time, that you allow the light of Christ to shine in your heart?

To come and be the Lord, that you choose to worship?
