Ministry Without Worship Does Not Grow / Podcast Ep. 209

Grow In Christ

Worship Chooses God

Companion Article

Many people come to church expecting to sing songs, pray, hear a message and maybe even gain some experience in worship. Then they go home. Unfortunately for some, it goes in one ear and out the another.

Many worship leaders get frustrated because they see their church members not singing; in the same way, pastors get frustrated because they see their people not serving. Many people go home frustrated because they didn’t get what they wanted. There is undoubtedly a disconnect. I believe this is one of the major problems in the Church today: Choice and value. How did it happen? Well, we have to look back to the Bible in the days of Moses.

The Israelites were constantly turning away from God and choosing other things. They valued foreign gods that became their worship. In a nutshell, the worship of God was no longer a value. People want to feel good, look good and hear good. They don’t want things that aren’t easy because it requires work. Even the people in your church and/or ministry, we’ve resorted to excuses and lack of commitment.

It wasn’t until God introduced the first Commandment in Exodus 20.3 ““You shall have no other gods before me.” This was a direct command and call to worship. God did not need fame from man, he wanted the heart of man. He wanted man for Himself as His delight and fellowship. He saved mankind, cleaned and took them in. God saw the value in man in order to save him – as he still loves, saves and values man today. The value we place on God is expressed through our worship, our serving and our behavior.

There is a choice involved in where we put our value into what/who we worship. Our task as a Church: how do we help influence people to choose God and choose to the value of His worship?  It starts with you, it starts with me. It’s in our response to God and how we respond to people through relationships. Do right. Choose right. You as a worshiper are making a difference. Have no other gods before Him. Show and share the value you place in God by your actions. Speak the truth in love as you love your neighbor. Help fan into flame into hearts that may have grown cold.  We can’t just sit in our pews, waiting for people to change. Pray and let God do the changing. You follow Him as he also changes you. Others will have to make that choice as we are all accountable to God.

Our ability to influence and set a precedence starts with the leadership at the top. I believe as leaders, we carry an incredible responsibility to our churches. We are to be proactive and intentional about worship. The Senior Pastor is the worship leader of the church. If they are not engaged or leading worship, the people will not have a vision and understanding for worship. No, this does not mean the Pastor needs to lead the singing (sigh). It means that they are engaged with people, worship and the message – fully. In example, they are not still preparing their notes during the worship time.

Another thought: We are a watching people. The Midas of the pastor and worship leader relationship is huge. People can see right through the veneer. If there is any schism to this bond, or lack thereof, so this will split the worship of the church, because there is a division in the local family of God. When Moses stepped out to lead the people, he kept worship at the top. Yes, he made mistakes, but he also did everything in his power to point towards the first commandment. We share this same task, in combination with Jesus’ command to love one another. Through this kind of love, we can help our churches move toward God and choose a deeper life of worship.

Worship is not an hour event, song, set-list, screen, stage, hymnal, person, instrument, bible version, lights, building, sermon, carpet color, plaques, donation, ministry, parking space or favorite seat – unless we choose it to be. Anything in this life requires work, especially in our relationship with God. Why? Because work produces fruit. What is that fruit? The fruit of the Spirit. It then becomes the value, as our worship belongs to God. Worship is a response to God, worship is for God and worship chooses God.
