Don't Make These 3 Mistak3s!

Onboard-them right!

Choosing a volunteer leader is a major ministry decision that can determine your team's trajectory for years to come. But when you don't have a definitive and biblical process in place (in the beginning and duration of your ministry), people will run you into the ground which will cost your ministry: spiritually, musically and emotionally.

3 Mistak3s You'll Make When Onboarding Worship Team Members

Choosing a volunteer leader is a major ministry decision that can determine your team's trajectory for years to come. But when you don't have a definitive and biblical process in place (in the beginning and duration of your ministry), people will run you into the ground which will cost your ministry: spiritually, musically and emotionally. So what can you do about it?

Choosing Volunteer
Major ministry decision
Will determine ministry trajectory

Need Definitive and biblical process in place
Otherwise people will run you into the ground

Costing your ministry
- Spiritually
- Musically
- Emotionally

At Worship Team Training
We found worship leaders who
Have a well-rooted biblical and definitive process
Report:
- substantially greater volunteer growth
- Positive development and retentage
- Than those who go it alone.

Worship Team Training
We help local worship teams
Embrace, challenge and overcome

Being aware and heading off these
Three common onboarding mistakes
Will help save and secure your ministry
And your people for years to come.

I started leading worship when I was 18
Didn't know anything, but music
No leadership, no system, no precedent
Leading worship was new
Band in church was weird
Getting volunteers was weird
Volunteers are still weird...

A dear friend said this to me just yesterday:
"Its easier to to keep out someone, rather than to let go of someone"

How you onboard your volunteers,
will set the precedent in their long-term stay.

But what about the volunteers you already have
- problems and all?

You can learn how to bring everyone
through this process of onboarding people
Broken down into three simple areas:

- Spiritual Onboarding
- Musical Onboarding
- Emotional Onboarding

They all funnel into the major problem of leading volunteers

Is the problem volunteering,
or is the problem your leading?

For me, I was the problem
so here's what I've done about it
And so can you...

Starting off, give volunteers 3 things:
- Clear Ministry Expectations
- Make Known 90 Day Trial
- Prepare to Move Them

In 90 days...
- Behaviors & personalities develop
- Reconvene to give feedback
- Either transition them into a new need
- Plant them into the current need

The Three Mistakes and what you can do about it
1. Spiritual Onboarding: three points

A. Spiritual Maturity
- You are not the Holy Spirit
- But you can see if they allow the Holy Spirit
- Working in them?

B. Don't Give Them an Audition
- Give them a conversation
- Listen to their story
- Hear the facts / not the imperfections
- They are not going to be Jesus
- They just need to be honest

C. Compassion Barometer
- Will they care for others?
- Will they love music more than ministry?
- Will they commit to unity

5 years ago I inherited a volunteer musician
- Great musically
- Unwilling spiritually
- Broke the trust of others
- Caused turmoil in the church

2 Peter 1:5-6

--
2. Musical Onboarding: two points

A. Empowering too early
- 3 weekly convos
- Watch a Rehearsal
- Sit among a Rehearsal
- Participate in a Rehearsal

- Try a Sunday
- Rotate every 2 weeks
- Totals 11-14 Weeks / Suffices your 90 day trial

B. Empowering when not equipped
- Work with their weaknesses, not against them
- Provide opportunities to grow
- Don't let them lead yet / 90 days andthemsome
- Evaluate their progress
- Provide feedback

Success story involving a singer
- Started seasonal choir
- Ended as worship leader
- She understood her space
- She overcame in humility

Proverbs 16:32

--
3. Emotional Onboarding: 2 points

A. Emotional Intelligence. What does it mean?
Having the ability be be self aware
In-tune with how you interact with people
In tune with how they interact with you
Without imposing your feelings
Without imposing entitlement and ego on that person
The ability to manage their own security
The ability to index their maturity

B. If you were to rate yourself + them...
- What is the in-tune factor?
- How much plays a role in adding "self" into the conversation?
- How often do they re-direct to the other person?
- What's the humility measurement?
- Can you see the future in how they may relate to others?
- How would this person bring value?

The out-of-tune worship leader
- Vocally was horrible
- Presentation-wise a wash
- But what he made up for in his personality,
    - Was being the kind of guy
    - Everyone wanted to be around

2 Timothy 2:24

"Spiritual kindness, musical candor, and emotional intelligence is such a brilliant mix for worship leadership"
